Scenic Mountains

On the weekend of March 30th, 2026, the Louth Scout County FIA took place in the rugged and scenic Cooley Mountains overlooking the village of Carlingford. The event brought together Scout teams from across the county for one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences in the Scouting calendar.

The Scouting Ireland FIA (Féile Idirnáisiúnta Eachtraíochta) Challenge is a lightweight, 3-day (2.5-day) expedition designed for Scouts aged 12 to 15.5. It aims to develop key outdoor and personal skills through a demanding but supportive environment. Over the course of the weekend, participants navigated remote terrain, carried all necessary equipment, and lived independently in small teams.

A Test of Skill and Teamwork

From the moment teams set off, the focus was on self-sufficiency. Each patrol was responsible for planning their route, managing time effectively, and navigating across the mountainous landscape using map and compass. The varied terrain of the Cooley Mountains—ranging from forest trails to steep inclines—provided both a physical and mental challenge.

Teamwork proved essential throughout. Scouts had to support one another through fatigue, changing weather conditions, and the practical demands of expedition life. Decision-making, communication, and resilience were all put to the test, helping participants grow in confidence and independence.

Life in the Outdoors

Wild camping formed a central part of the experience. Teams selected suitable campsites, pitched their tents, and prepared their own meals using portable stoves. Cooking under these conditions required planning, efficiency, and creativity, with Scouts learning how to balance nutrition, weight, and practicality.

The overnight element added another layer to the challenge. As daylight faded, teams settled into their camps, often sharing stories and reflecting on the day’s journey. Despite the physical demands, many participants described this as one of the most memorable aspects of the weekend.

Adventure Skills in Action

The FIA Challenge is closely linked to the Adventure Skills programme within Scouting Ireland, particularly in the areas of hillwalking, navigation, and camping. The event provides a real-world environment where Scouts can apply and demonstrate these skills at an advanced level.

Leaders accompanied each team, maintaining a safe distance to allow independence while ensuring safety and guidance when necessary. This balance allowed young people to take ownership of their experience while still benefiting from the support structure of Scouting.

A Memorable Weekend

The Louth Scout County FIA 2026 was more than just a hike—it was an opportunity for young people to challenge themselves, build lasting friendships, and develop skills that extend far beyond the mountains. The sense of achievement at the finish point was evident across all teams, as tired but proud Scouts reflected on what they had accomplished together.

Events like this highlight the core values of Scouting: adventure, teamwork, and personal growth. For many participants, the Cooley Mountains will remain a place of both challenge and unforgettable memories.
